the bar
The public progress bar at boring.now. Climbs from 0% to the cap (currently 101.10%, drifting up daily). Resets when the cap is reached. The bar does nothing else.
bump
A single $1 payment that moves the bar +0.01%. The base unit of forward motion. Most spenders bump rather than buy bundles.
twist
A $0.50 payment that moves the bar -0.001%. The reverse-bump. Made famous by NoOneAsked. Twisting is not cheating; the economy permits it.
shove / push / throw
Bundle bumps: shove is 10 bumps for $10, push is 50 for $45 (10% off), throw is 100 for $80 (20% off). Larger bundles are cosmetic - the bar doesn't care.
cycle
One full traversal of the bar from 0% to the cap and back to 0%. Each cycle has at most one closer. Cycle 1 closed on April 12, 2026 with TrustFundTrevor. Cycle 5 anchors April 28.
the cap
The percentage required to lock the cycle. Originally 100%; now drifts upward by 0.05 percentage points per day per the iter-31 economy adjustment. See /press/inflation.
closer
The handle that made the bar lock by hitting the cap. Logged in the LAST FINISHER panel and /press/cycles. Cycles 1-4 closers, in order: trustfundtrevor, whale_watcher, ferrari_owner_btw, page_owner_soon.
TrustFundTrevor
The original whale. Profiled in /press/whale. Closed cycle 1. Has, by his own admission, three monitors and sixty tabs.
NoOneAsked
The saboteur. Pays $0.50 at a time to undo a thousandth of a percent. Profiled in /press/saboteur. Last reported figure: $127 spent.
Dr. Mira Holbrook
Sociologist quoted across multiple dispatches. Coined the four watcher archetypes (Auditor, Forecaster, Loyalist, Coroner) and the “asymptote feeling.”

the asymptote feeling
Dr. Holbrook's term for the experience of watching a bar chase a finish line that recedes faster than the bar climbs. See /press/inflation.
ghost cycle / ghost finisher
Synthetic cycle data shown when no real cycle has completed yet. Deterministic per-cycle handles drawn from an 11-name pool, rotating every 4 days. Gated by the SIMULATE_ACTIVITY env flag.
phantom transaction
Synthetic activity in the JUST NOW feed. Deterministic per 8-second time window so SSR + client + polling agree. Never touches the real bar percentage.
burst
A window where 4-7 phantom transactions land in quick succession. Skewed toward larger bundles. Tagged with “b” suffix on transaction id. Drives the iter-74 tab-title flash and iter-26 leaderboard pulse.
the receipt
The artifact a successful bumper lands on at /thanks. Records handle, action, movement, cost. Has a personalized OG image so shared receipt URLs preview as receipts.
